"Blue Day" Celebration - Mound City Council Proclaims October 24th as
Shirley Hills Day
In recognition of Shirley Hills receiving the coveted No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award, Mound City Council proclaimed October 24th as Shirley Hills Day. To further mark this banner day, Shirley Hills Principal Ann Swanson held a Blue Day celebration last Thursday.
The day started out with an assembly where Swanson showed students the award and used a PowerPoint presentation to show highlights from her trip to Washington D.C. on October 20-21 where she and retired Shirley Hills' teacher, Yoli Clark, traveled to attend the award ceremony. At the ceremony, this year's winners received a plaque and a flag signifying their school's status as an award-winning school and their role as a model for other schools throughout the country.
To continue the Blue Day celebration, students and staff were decked out in special Blue Ribbon tie-dyed t-shirts. And to create even more Blue Day fun--about 26 parent volunteers joined in as Wacky Hair Artists. Students, teachers and even Westonka Superintendent, Kevin Borg, lined up for wacky blue hair styles.
In the afternoon, teachers and students created Vision Banners and played Blue Ribbon Games in their classrooms. For the vision banners, students brought in pictures, made drawings, and cut words out of magazines to represent who they are now and what their dreams are for the future. All the items that were gathered were collaged together onto a banner to be hung in the hallway. These banners will remind students of who they are now and keep them focused on their future goals. And to top it all off, everyone enjoyed special blue treats created by Chef Sandy, Shirley Hills head cook.
