Band and choir teacher at Mound HS and Shirley Hills Elementary School. Jack and his wife have enjoyed a lot of retirement years!  Currently, they are living in Comfrey, Minnesota, where they create and print The Comfrey Times/ Darfur Gazette.  After leaving teaching in Mound, he went on to get a degree in graphic arts/media/television from Mankato State. Since leaving Mound, they have lived in quite a few towns in southern Minnesota, and they've had the opportunity to travel quite a bit of the country.  He taught graphic arts, television, and radio for Blue Earth Co-Op and Springfield Co-Op and finally retired once more from teaching.   He continued to  play trumpet and drums with old-time bands in a variety of venues and KNUJ television in Mankato.  He also played with the Sauerkraut Band for many years in New Ulm at the Heritagefest and has done trumpet duty for various American Legions.   Carol and Jack continue to run their newspaper and will attend their oldest grand-daughter's wedding in June.  He keeps in close contact with Chuck Henthorne and John Kotula's widow, Marcie.  Greetings to all!

He attended the U of M, later transferring to UND, playing baseball and basketball at both, captaining the basketball team at UND. He earned a BA in education and during summers played minor league baseball for Williston. Larry went on to earn an MA in Education Administration at NDSU while coaching basketball and later he earned a Specialist Degree in Education Administration at MSU. In 1965, he married the love of his life Sharon Conyne. He taught at Perham and Farmington, before finding a career home at Mound Westonka in 1967. Over the next 29 years he coached baseball & basketball, taught all grade levels and was an asst principal. From ‘89 to ‘96 he fulfilled his dream of being an Athletic Director. After retiring, he continued to work MWHS sporting events, organize the Tri-Metro & Metro Alliance Conferences, and run tournaments for the MN State HS League. Preceded in death by parents, Herman and Sophie Exel; brother Ken & nephew John. Larry loved being a teacher, coach, and Athletic Director, but he loved spending time with family and friends even more. He treasured his time playing golf, traveling, cheering on the Yankees and going to as many U of M & Carleton women basketball games as he could. Special thanks to Drs. JP Carlson, Vercellotti, & Burns, and other staff at Methodist, and the U of M BMT Unit. In the end he was still a teacher: allowing doctors to study him and showing loved ones across the country how to go forward risking everything while being filled with hope. He left us too soon on Oct 19th. Remember him not as someone who lost a courageous year long battle to Leukemia, but as a humble man who had a sense of humor that inspired an inside joke with everyone, a smile for the smallest of children, a hole-in-one on his scorecard, and a father who will never be loved by a daughter more; a rich man indeed. Backus, MN 56435 It has been said that summer vacations are just a practice for retirement. How true!  Ample time to do what you want, when you want.  Since retiring after 24 years in Mound, Sharon and her husband Bill have permanently retired in their lake home north of Brainerd.  Ample time to: read, shop, do those artsy-crafty projects put off until "later", travel to Singapore to see their grandchildren and other fascinating places, visit, entertain, and communicate frequently with those far and near via e-mail.  After a period of adjustment, their lives have assumed a pattern of daily home life, with snowmobiling and "nesting" in the winter to lawn and gardening in the summer.  As the saying goes, "How SWEET it is"!

In between times are her usual pastimes-of-choice.  Then, her three children and their families presented her with this amazing gift of a computer for her last birthday and Christmas, and it has filled in every other chunk of spare time.  She is gradually cracking the mystery of it all.  Her grandchildren gave her her pseydonym.
